Art With Me Calendar of Events

March 4, 2024 - Gustav Klimt (Mixed Media Art)
Despite the detailed elegance of Gustav Klimt’s “Tree of Life” painting, this quick, calming art lesson can be completed in under an hour. We will be working in metallic paint for this project. There is a quality to the metallic paints that makes the paint glide over the paper. It’s quite lovely and the children enjoy the process.

March 18, 2024 - Gyotaku (fish stamping on newsprint)
Families will explore the historical and cultural qualities of Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese method of printing fish. Families will identify the external parts of fish, then create original Gyotaku prints.

March 25, 2024 - Georgia O’Keefe (Acrylic Paint on Canvas)
The families will  explore mixing paint colors together to create tints. We will replicate the “happy flowers” O’Keefe inspired.

April 1, 2024 - Paul Cezanne (Still Life Acrylic Paint)
Together the families will look to Cézanne to introduce the concept of still-life painting to kids. I love his dark colors and moody shadows. We will place a few darker colors on the table and add some chalk so the families can easily recreate their own still-life paintings just like Cézanne.

April 8, 2024 - Edgar Degas (Mixed Media)
Wanna talk about art history with your kids?  Then ballerinas and race horses are a good place to start, right?  Edgar Degas has lots to offer in terms of work that is kid friendly and sure to spur a conversation.

April 15, 2024 - Maurits Cornelis Escher (black and white sketch/ Tessellation Art)
Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch graphic artist born in 1898 who made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints. He was a draftsman, book illustrator, tapestry designer, and muralist, but his main work was as a printmaker. He became known for his detailed realistic prints that achieved bizarre optical and conceptual effects.

April 22, 2024 - Jim Dine (Pop Art/ Mixed Media)
The Pop Art movement shocked America and the art world and helped shape the nature of modern art. Tonight, the families will be making confetti hearts inspired by the work of Jim Dine.

April 29, 2024 - Alexander Calder (Mobile Art)
Alexander Calder was an American artist known mostly for his kinetic sculptures - mobiles which hung from the ceiling, and stabiles which stand on the ground. Balance, form, shape, space and color work together in these modern, whimsical designs. My third grade classes made stabiles from recycled yarn cones and mobiles using a variety of sticks, straws and wires. Colorful craft foam is great for the shapes because of its light-as-a-feather quality.

May 6, 2024 - Giotto di Bondone (Acrylic Paint)
Giotto was an Italian painter in the 1300s. He is known for adding depth to pictures by adding the background and for making his people look more life-like by adding emotions.  Giotto mainly painted frescos. A fresco is a painting done on wet plaster; the color really sinks in and give the color a glowing look to it. Tonight the families will create Acrylic Paint using egg yolk. We mixed up 2 egg yokes with 2 TAB water. Then we added it to the chalk and we had our paint. (We used a muffin tin for the paint)

May 13, 2024 - Kindah Khalidy (Mixed Media Art)
This Kindah Khalidy art lesson will boost confidence and creativity. Kids will enjoy her bright, abstract paintings of recognizable images like cacti, clouds, and strawberries. Moreover, they’ll appreciate learning about her art process. During this art project, your class will learn Kindah Khalidy’s painting process, from how she layers “blobs” to what color they’ll be. Use it to discuss color mixing, organic vs. geometric shapes, and textiles.
